The creation of the new multidisciplinary sports event, the Mediterranean Beach Games (MBG), was decided during the meeting of the ICMG Executive Committee on October 20th, 2012, in Mersin, Turkey.
The MBG are celebrated every four years bringing together the athletes of the Mediterranean Olympic Committees, members of the ICMG, from three continents: Africa, Asia and Europe.

Tokyo was selected as the host city during the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina on 7 September 2013.These Games will mark the return of the Summer Olympics to Tokyo for the first time since 1964

The Sixth Asian Beach Games will be held in Sanya, China. Sanya will be the second Chinese city to host the Asian Beach Games, after Haiyang 2012.
On 11 April 2019, the Olympic Council of Asia initially announced that the Games would feature 16 sports.
